Day 94: In Smiths Falls
Day 94: Monday, July 18th: This morning we got the bicycles down and had a nice ride to the major tourist attraction in town, the Hershey's Chocolate plant, one of several Hershey's plants in Canada. It as the first Hershey's plant to be built outside of Hershey, PA and was closed in December 2008. The welcome sign appeals to the child in all of us, albeit in need of fresh paint:
Just inside the main entrance is the candy store and they were doing a land office business when we finished the tour. Note the bikes at the far right:
We noticed the street lights that light the parking lot. Cute:
It was hot outside (still mid 90s) but quite cool inside. We did a self-guided tour with some displays and videos explaining the candy-making processes. They make O'Henry and Peanut Butter Cups (among other products) here. The most fun part was the packaging operation.
We had to go back to the grocery store and we needed to send a large batch of these pictures and logs. Ruth did the store while Bill went to an internet café, "Dave's.com Cafe" to send files and get email.
Later in the day some friends we had met in Beaufort, SC, aboard "Bullet" and some we met in Cape May, NJ, aboard "Pollyanna" arrived in the harbor together; it was like old home week! We chatted so long that we missed the restaurants being open. Ah, well! It was a pleasant evening anyway.
