Day 80: Monday, July 4th: Today started with Ruth walking back into town to buy some groceries while Bill filled the water tank and made other preparations.
This was to be another day of unknowns in spite if its short distance. We wanted to traverse what is called "the St. Lawrence Seaway" through the Montreal area. Montreal City is on Montreal Island, one of many islands in the area. The river is actually full of swift current and rapids which big ships have trouble navigating, so they built a canal around the south side of all the trouble, inserted a couple of giant locks and called it the "Seaway".
The Seaway began just outside and south of the Longueuil Marina. As we left this morning the Montreal skyline greeted us again, as did a huge amusement park:
We tied up to the canal wall (free, once you buy the seasonal pass). This is the site of the local promenade and it is well-used by people by the hundreds. We never figured out where they all lived because the local town is very small. The promenade was a few steps higher than the boats moored in the canal. Look closely to see some of the smaller boats:
