Day 75: Burlington,VT to Rouses Point, NY
Day 75: Wednesday, June 29th: Last night a couple of huge thunderstorms developed to the west of us. Fortunately they moved northeast and missed us. However, they were quite impressive to see through the haze:
We awoke this morning to drizzle and haze. The weather prediction was for a 60% chance of rain, hot, hazy and humid. We stopped at the marina fuel dock to pump out the holding tank (our adapter had arrived yesterday) and buy fuel. We didn't need much fuel but the price here ($2.20/gal.) was the best on the Lake. We bid farewell to Burlington and the breakwater:
The weather prediction was correct except the cloud cover kept the temperature down to the mid-80's. The view of the lake was consistently like this:
Near the north end of Lake Champlain we came across this flock of Cormorants - the largest group we have seen:
We mentioned that there are very few bridges crossing Lake Champlain that connect Vermont with New York; we now know there are two. One was the Champlain bridge at the south end and the other is this one at Rouses Point, NY:
Our planned stop for the night was just south of this bridge: variously called "Marina at Lighthouse Point", "Lighthouse Marina" or "Marina Lighthouse":
The entrance to the marina is marked by some rather unique floating buoys:
This is a very complete marina with showers, launderette, restrooms, a ship's store and a restaurant at the head of the main pier. About 75% of the boats moored in the marina are of Canadian registry. Everyone speaks French. We are about a quarter-mile from the Canadian border here:
Integrity was moored at the end of one of the piers:
Along the main dock at each pier there was a pretty pot of flowers:
It is interesting that the marina is built on an abandoned railroad trestle that crossed Lake Champlain in the late 19th century. They had reclaimed part of the trestle and made it into a sort of breakwater to protect the marina boats from the prevailing southerly winds:
We decided to wander into the town of Rouses Point and mail some post cards. While there is a small grocery store, deli, liquor store and post office in town, there isn't much else. The most colorful and lively spot was Armond's Place 2:
We walked back to the boat in a light drizzle and had supper. Tomorrow: Canada!
