Day 73: Monday, June 27th: We arose early this morning to take advantage of the cooler part of the day. We re-stepped the mast with the help of a fellow from a nearby sailboat. No mishaps! However, when we tried to pump out the holding tank, the marina did not have an adapter that would fit our boat. Bill immediately ordered one to be shipped "next day air" to our planned stop for tonight.

This was the third time a marina could not provide a pump-out on our trip, and now that we have no option to pump overboard, it is critical to have all the equipment needed.

We left and headed north toward Burlington, VT. The sides of the lake here are typically very steep, making for deep water right up to the bank. It is also pretty:

Lake Champlain is about 110 miles long but only about ten miles wide at the widest place. Although we are now in the wide part of the lake, there are narrow spots. One is at Split Rock Point where there is an abandoned lighthouse and a new lighted marker. The width of the lake here is a little over a mile:

In spite of the narrowness we found the deepest water we have been in so far. Here is proof that is was well over 400 feet (the meter on the left shows water depth). The right one is our course according to the autopilot. Anyone paying close attention will note we turned from north to northeast to find this deep point. Yes, Otto the autopilot is driving:

The deepest we saw in this pocket was a brief 422 feet. Wow! Even the Atlantic Ocean was only about 180 feet max!

We cruised on in the increasing haze and heat and finally passed inside the breakwater at Burlington:

Burlington is the largest city in these parts, and sits right on the waterfront. It is thriving, and reminded us a little of coastal California:

There is quite a variety of ferries and tour boats buzzing around in the harbor. Big ones:

Some of the ferries are just for people - no cars. That's a tour boat on the right:

Ruth had arranged to meet with a friend of hers who lives near Burlington. When we tied up at the "Ferry Dock Marina" there was friend Lisa and her friend, Ginger (Lisa is on the right):

They were fun, and Lisa later drove us all over town to run errands, pick up supplies and eat supper. Guess where Lisa had selected to eat: Longhorn Steak House, a restaurant chain based in Atlanta! Small world!

The Ferry Dock Marina shares a waterfront dock with the Breakwater Café and Grill, a lively nightspot with music, food and revelry. Thankfully, they closed at 10:00 pm:
