Day 69: Still in Waterford, NY
Day 69: Thursday, June 23rd: We had to go to the post office and then the grocery store to get provisions. Along the way we spotted this unusually colorful house:
We noticed that all the fire hydrants ("fire plugs" to those from Alabama) had striped steel rods sticking up from them. We guessed the rods marked where the hydrants were when the snow was high - after all, this IS upstate New York! Note that the streets of Waterford aren't very busy:
As we strolled along, we discovered this interesting sign telling of an unusual fact. Ya' gotta' be proud of yer home town!
When we got back to the Visitor Center we realized we had not taken a picture, or explained, the unusual brick inlay pattern in the sidewalk along the dock. It is a map of the New York Canal System. The long winding path of light colored bricks is the Erie Canal, inside the circle is the junction where the Visitor Center is and the little trail going off to the left is the rest of the Hudson River and Champlain Canal. The Champlain is continued at the back of the building. The various towns are marked with their own brick. It is all to scale and pretty accurate:
We went to bed early after catching up with other boat folks at the docks. There were lots of transients planning to traverse the canals tomorrow. We planned for a fairly early "get up" for the morning trek up the Champlain.
