Day 64: Coeymans Landing to Waterford, NY
Day 64: Friday, June 10th:We had a few more chores to handle this morning and the tidal current was still unfriendly (yes there is still tidal current this far north on the Hudson) so we got underway about 9:30 am. We didn't have far to go to get to Albany, NY.
As we approached Albany, the pretty green hills gave way to the city:
Cruising into downtown Albany this tri-master was tied to a dock. We couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. Tour boat? Replica of Hudson's boat? Private yacht? We took a picture anyway because we liked it!
We were sort of sorry that we didn't plan to stop in Albany like this Willard 40 trawler did. We had chatted with the Willard's solo owner in Kingston. He is from the Pacific Northwest and plans to take the boat back to Bellingham, WA eventually. Fascinating guy! Albany is an historic town, and the skyline from the Hudson is cool:
Seven or eight miles upriver is Troy, NY and the Troy Lock and Dam. Folks call this the "Troy Federal Lock" because it is the only one in the area that is not part of the New York Canal System. It seems imposing as we transit into it:
Once up, we sigh with a little relief. We are now out of tidal waters and approaching fresh water. Maybe this is "fresh" water we are going into, but it is filthy!
A mile further, you get to make the choice:
We had planned to go the right hand route, but 200 yards to the left of this sign is the neatest Welcome Center in New York. It is a dock and it's free for two days (we have already been here three as we write this). Free electricity, water, showers, bathrooms, etc. Lots of our friends here. About another 500 yards west of the docks is the start of the famous Erie Canal. Thrilling to be here:
We tied to the public docks and were greeted by our friends from Candy Dish, Stephie's Choice and Cori. Cool! We had cocktail hour on "Hearts Desire" and all the guys walked out in a rainstorm to a neat little Chinese take-out in town. Everyone ate under shelter at a picnic table at the docks. Great time, and the take-out lasted for two meals for us. Considering we paid $13.65 total, it was the best bargain we have had on the trip!
And so to bed.
