Day 61: Tuesday, June 7th:The tidal current in the Hudson River is so strong, that cruisers time their travels, as best they can, to take advantage of favorable currents. At times the current can be two knots or more. As a result, our little armada - Candy Dish, Stephie's Choice, Integrity and new member, Cori, got underway at 6:30 am. Skinwalker was going up the East River and into Long Island Sound so they got to sleep in.

Sadly, the haze was still with us so Lady Liberty, the Manhattan skyline and other views were strangely eerie:

Just north of Liberty is the famous Ellis Island where so many of our forefathers first touched American soil:

Many people can recognize a picture of the Manhattan skyline, but most miss the fact that the New Jersey side has a cool skyline also. This is part of Jersey City, just north of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty:

Looking east, this is what Manhattan looked like at about 7:00 am:

This looked to us like an abandoned ferry terminal. Nothing was happening here in spite of it being rush hour (Jersey side):

This building is an air handler for one end of one of the Holland Tunnel under the Hudson. There is another just like it on the other side. They are HUGE:

Erie-Lackawanna runs a whole series of ferries between New Jersey and the various islands. The ferries are fast and leave the terminals at almost full speed. The one in the picture is arriving. The moorages for the ferries are completely covered to keep rain and snow off the customers:

There are at least two golf driving ranges on the river. One was on the Manhattan side and this one on the Jersey side. Cost was probably about $300 per bucket of balls. Waterfront property is expensive!

As we moved northward the buildings got smaller and less frequent, the trees and homes became more frequent. Next, the George Washington Bridge came into view. This is a double decked bridge. Locals call the top level "George" and the bottom level "Martha":

We noticed strange scaffolding on the towers. Apparently, the job of painting the bridge goes on constantly. I wish I were in the scaffold business - or the painting business:

Still moving north, the palisades (as I think they are called) take over the banks. Looking west, they are not only impressive but also beautiful:

However, the barge traffic is incessant -- LOOK OUT, Candy Dish!:

After experiencing long days for the last three or four, we all decided an early stop at a good anchorage would be great. About 2:00 in the afternoon we all were snugly anchored in Haverstraw Bay. We suspect everyone took a nap on this warm afternoon:

Our social organizers, Bill and Karen on Candy Dish hosted a deck party about 5:00 pm and Mike from Stephie's Choice provided his dinghy as a water taxi. It was great fun. The view of the little local park was delightful:

Dinner back on Integrity for us and we hit the sack.
