Day 58: Still in Cape May, NJ
Day 58: Saturday, June 4th: It rained until about 1:30 in the afternoon today. We got cabin fever and got the bikes down and cycled in to visit Cape May. This is what we look like on the bikes (yeah, like two AARP life members):
Cape May, NJ, is on the National Historic Registry because it has buildings dating back to 1812. That may be, but we have seen older buildings in several towns along the way and aren't sure they share the same honor. Regardless, Cape May is very charming and quaint. Several homes, inns and B&B's caught the eye of the camera.
This is Southern Mansion, an inn:
This is the Inn of Cape May, right on the beach. A huge inn that looks like it would blow away, but it hasn't:
It has a charming veranda:
Ruth and I joked that the best job to have in Cape May is to be a painter. Note this colorful home:
On the bike tour, we stopped to walk Cape May's street mall, with many shops of all types for the Saturday crowd to drop a few bucks on gifts and ice cream. Really cool people watch (and listening - we are in "Noo Joisey"):
This house caught Ruth's eye because it had a nice garden:
The Cape May Fire Department has a small museum next door. It is housed in this old firehouse. Note the old-timey fire plugs at the front and the fire axes adorning the tower. There was probably a bell in that tower that called the volunteers:
The fire engine inside was shiny and spotless:
Ruth was fascinated by the texture and style of the masonry. We guessed it was a modification of the Flemish style we learned about in Chestertown, MD. Maybe our geocacher friend JB could identify it:
Returning to the Marina, we got the landlubber view of the approach:
We planned for an early departure for tomorrow, so turned in early.
