Day 49: Thursday, May 26th: Today the weather turned beautiful and warmed up. We had fresh Driscoll's strawberries for breakfast on our Wheaties and were ready for a visit into Chestertown. We discovered Chestertown is a lovely pre-revolutionary war town. Many homes were built in the mid-eighteenth century. We took a walking tour and started with a fountain in the center of the historic district:

Along the streets the city has lovely plantings around the trees:

One of the early merchant's homes had a very nice garden beside his huge waterfront home. It is still maintained in perfect trim:

One of the homes started in 1796 had several updates including a service wing and a two-story oriel window of the Queen Anne type was put on at the end. A break with tradition:

The more wealthy merchants owned the homes that were built along the riverfront earlier in the period. These merchants could afford extra frontage beside the house for gardens and yards like this:

The homes really are beautiful, and a great tribute to a lifestyle long gone:

This relative newcomer (built in 1886) is Stam's Hall. It was a drugstore on the bottom floor and a meeting and partying spot in the upper floors. It has a bell in the top that the local citizens donated $1,000 to purchase and it still tolls the hour:

We were fascinated by the roof of the pharmacy:

We had lunch at the Blue Heron Café, hands down the best meal we have had in six months (except for a dinner prepared for us by Gael Cone back home). Totally delightful!

Then we did a little shopping for provisions and went back to the boat to do laundry and such. We had cocktails again with friend Dale (James was off on a work project) aboard Integrity, a quick supper and to bed. A very nice day.
