Day 48: Wednesday, May 25th: The weather deteriorated during the night and we got underway in about a 10-15 knot wind and spitting drizzle. As the day progressed it got much worse. Winds built to 20-25 knots, the seas got up to about four feet and the rain was steady. The temperature hovered in the low 50s. Not a very pretty spring day.
A few miles north from St. Michaels, in open water, we came across a disabled sailboat. An elderly couple was chartering the boat and had their engine had quit. Their radio was also not working and they had no cell phone. Fortunately, the water where they were was about thirty feet deep and they had dropped their anchor to check their drift. It being far too rough to assist them ourselves, we called the charter company (cell phone) and arranged for a tow boat to come out from Annapolis )about thirty miles away). We continued on our way after assuring the couple that help was on the way. We later got a call from the tow company that the sailboat had been rescued and was being towed to a boatyard. Sadly, we failed to take any pictures!
We continued north through Kent Narrows, a narrow passageway between Kent Island and Maryland's Eastern Shore. Here is where one of the busiest highways crosses the Narrows and the Chesapeake Bay. There was about two knots of current against us as we approached the drawbridge, trying to make the 11:30 am scheduled opening.
