Day 43: Friday, May 20th: It rained hard all night last night, and the winds built to about thirty knots - not predicted. We awoke to very dark, angry skies with high winds. The anchor seemed to be holding, so we decided to do things inside and wait it out. The winds continued to build and Bill was nervous as a groom at a wedding. At about 3:30 p.m. the anchor broke loose. Fortunately, Bill was looking out the window at the time and noticed the lee shore was only about thirty feet away! He started the engine and called to Ruth for help.
Together, we were able to raise the anchor while staying off the bank. Then we motored in about fifty knot wind gusts winding further upstream (and upwind) into La Trappe Creek, looking for a place that was safe from the weather. As the depth indicator was dropping to zero, we spotted a landing with a nice bulwark and managed to tie to it. We were safe!
The wind was still howling, but the rain had stopped. In the narrow little creek, the waves were about one foot. A picture looked like this, although it hard to see how the trees were bent with the wind:
