Day 35: NC Welcome Center to Norfolk VA
Day 35: Thursday, May 12th: We got underway before breakfast and slowly cruised the 17 remaining miles of the Dismal Swamp Canal. The calm water were the color of root beer (from the tannic acid leeched from the juniper and cypress trees). It made a perfect mirror image of the foliage on the side of the canal. Looking into this mirror image was hypnotic:
If you turn the picture upside down, it blows your mind:
And into Virginia, the fourth of the states we will visit:
We arrived at the Deep Creek lock at the north end of the canal just behind our friends in Cool Breeze. They entered first:
Once out of the pristine canal, we were greeted with the industry of suburban Norfolk, VA:
..and the maritime action along the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River:
And right in the heart of downtown Norfolk, was this delightful little ferry:
As we tried to pull into our marina for the night, we were blocked by these lovely vessels:
We moored at Waterside Marina and wandered the area. It was fun to see this statue, "The Tourists" sharing our view of the harbor:

We were kept awake until the wee hours by a rock band playing nearby. Bummer..
