Day 34: Wednesday, May 11th: Choppy berth all night, but we woke to calm waters and a little fog - the first we've seen. As we progressed up the Pasquotank River, we thought we were blocked by this low railroad bridge:

However, it was open, and we passed on by. The River became more and more beautiful. Easily the prettiest cruising of the trip so far:

From the River, we turned into the Thompson Cut leading to the Dismal Swamp Canal. Equally pretty, but straight as a surveyor's laser:

We arrived at our first lock of the trip, South Mills Lock, about 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled 11:00 a.m. opening. A trimaran had been there for a while:

As the lock opened, he went first:

We entered the "Great Dismal Swamp Canal" fearing everything from bears to water moccasins. But it was pristine and beautiful. Sad that US Highway 17 was no more than 100 yards to our right, but behind a wall of trees. We soon arrived at the North Carolina Welcome Center, and tied up for the night with some new found friends, Ray and Patty, aboard "Cool Breeze":

This was a free dock, and the Welcome Center staff was very nice. Here is what the canal looked like from our berth:

And soon after, Neely showed up in Nomad Plant. We had a nice chat and then to bed.
