Day 32: Dowry Creek Marina to Alligator River Marina, NC
Day 32: Monday, May 9th: Today the weather report was much better - slight winds and clear skies. As we headed up the Pungo River and toward Alligator River, it was beautiful:
For anyone who has not traveled the Intercoastal Waterway (ICW) the Corps of Engineers has placed mile markers every five miles (in most areas). Here is one we got close to as we entered the "Alligator River - Pungo River Canal":
"110" means we are 110 miles from Norfolk, VA. Look further down the log for a picture of the zero mile mark..
This part of the waterway is used by commercial vessels and they take a LOT of room. This guy was so formidable, we pulled off to the right (note the Cypress "knees") and stopped to allow him to pass:
Once through the "A & P Canal" we cruised north down the Alligator River (yes, the River flows north) to the Alligator River Marina. This is another famous place - due to the personality of "Miss Wanda." She is the legendary proprietress, and a real hard-nosed soft-hearted lady. We are miffed that we didn't have the presence of mind to get a picture of her, or of the marina. Bummer!
