Day 31: Sunday, May 8th: [Webmaster's note: Happy Mother's Day, Ruthie!] We got up early today, but were still almost last to leave the marina. Partly due to wanting to get more pictures of the unique harbor. For example, this mile post:

As we nosed out into Pamlico Sound, on of the more open areas we will travel on the Great Loop, we were fascinated in how the edge of the pine "forest" tended to dwindle to nothing as it reached the lowering edge of the weather-beaten land mass:

It was quite rough crossing the sound, and the 3-5 foot seas were right on our beam causing a lot of rocking. We tried to get a picture that showed the deep rolls, but couldn't. Fortunately, nothing broke loose or fell out of the cabinets or closets.

We entered the Pungo River and tied up at Dowry Creek Marina:

The marina is a favorite of the "transients" going from the north to Florida and vice-versa. As a result, everyone here knows everyone else. The marina has very nice facilities, including a dockside pool:

And the water had calmed to a mirror:
