Day 29: Friday, May 6th: We slept fairly fitfully last night in 40-50 knot gusts and heavy rains. Today is worse. In spite of being tied up to a dock, which is now underwater by about a foot, the winds and rain are frightening. The bimini (canvas) tops on some of the boats in the marina have blown off, the marina flags broke their halyards, the local electricity has gone off and no one is moving on the water. We hope our top stays together. Bill went out to double the lines and it was all he could do to stay on his feet. "Brutal!"
The winds were enough to lift the water level about three feet, which meant our dock would go under water and our fenders might lift over the pilings. Bad news! Actually the wind blowing across Pamlico Sound and into the Neuse River raised the water level about four feet. The view out our rain-soaked window looked like this:
