Day 288 Wednesday, February 8th: Today marks our ten-month anniversary of being on The Great Loop! Seems like one month! This is fun.
This morning we both got the same idea about the same time. We realized that if we started cruising north now in early February we would be in the cold climates before it warmed up. Also, if we dragged our feet, making short distances each day or even every other day, we would be burning up our budget on marina bills. There just aren't that many good anchorages in the upper Keys and lower Florida.
So we made a momentous decision: we would try to find a marina in the Keys that we could stay at for a month and take advantage of the greatly reduced rates AND the good weather!
We called around the area and found three possible candidates. One marina in Tavernier had very shallow water; one was very remote to shopping and such so we chose the third, Lighthouse Cay Marina at the head of Boot Key Harbor. Until this past summer when new owners bought it, it was called Sombrero Resort and Marina. It's changed hands again since then.
