Day 28: Thursday, May 5th: Cinco de Mayo! Also a triple number day (three fives)! So we decided to fly into the eye of the storm. We got underway in 25 knot winds and fought our way north from Beaufort into the Adams Creek Canal. We were hoping to get across the Neuse River to Oriental, NC. NO WAY! Every boat that moved onto the Neuse turned around and reported super bad seas. The most heard description was, "Brutal!"

We decided to duck into a little basin marina on the canal called "Sea Gate Marina."

It was a fairly pleasant place except they were predicting the worst weather anyone had seen in these parts in the spring. A true Nor'easter was blowing straight into the Neuse. They stopped opening drawbridges due to high winds. A "storm" was reported (think "tropical storm"). In June it would have had a name. We hunkered down. Bill worked on this log posting, while Ruth decided to go to the downwind side of the boat and do some much-needed waxing. The work is never done! Then…the rains and wind came..

Being Cinco de Mayo we made a delightful taco salad and drank a couple beers. Our spirits rose in spite of the weather!
