Day 263: Saturday, January 14th: The weather forecast was right on. About 2:00am we were awakened by very high winds, blowing rain and a chop in the marina basin. Shades of "The Perfect Storm!"

As a matter of fact, the same conditions that made the "Perfect Storm" existed here now. A strong low pressure area off the Atlantic coast combined with a strong high pressure in the Ohio valley combined to rocket strong north winds down through most of Florida. WOW, it was windy!

In spite of the excellent protection there was a good chop in the marina basin…:

The palm trees and flags waved and snapped as though a hurricane were going through. The construction crane at the site next door could not be used; they had to tie the boom to the ground:

The white-capped waves in the river were breaking over the seawall:

Friends Ken and Joyce showed up after breakfast in their truck to take us shopping. We stocked up and took the provisions back to the boat and then went on an "explore." Ken and Joyce had been in the area for a month this year, plus a long visit last year, so were virtual natives. One highlight they took us to was a Lee County park that was adjacent to a steam power generating plant. The warm water outflow from the plant attracts manatees by the dozen, and the park is a popular spot to "manatee watch."

The water was too choppy to allow a good picture of the ten or so manatees we saw, but this is a picture of the rather realistic sculpture on the park grounds.

Ken and Joyce were driving home to Canada starting tonight, so we bid them a safe journey and waved goodbye.
