Day 258: Monday, January 9th: We did a couple of chores to get ready to go this morning and then got underway about 10:30am. We wanted to go about 35 miles today, so an early departure was not necessary.

We soon arrived in Sarasota and noticed the pink-purple low building on the shore. It must have been a theatre or something:

The city's skyline seemed dominated by high-rise condominiums:

We cruised among lovely mega-dollar homes and through drawbridges, no-wake zones and manatee zones at slow speeds. A couple of the bridges had to open for us to clear:

By mid-afternoon we arrived at our destination: the Higel Park dock in Venice, FL. It's a free dock you can tie to for eighteen hours. They offer no water or electrical hookups, but the price is right. We looked up and saw Just Ducky, a tourist boat easing past us toward the launching ramp. The next sequence of events was truly surprising!

We took this opportunity to chronicle Integrity's berth; it was a nice spot:

Ruth needed to mail a package so we walked the 1-1/4 mile into downtown Venice to the post office. Today is the day postage went up and the line was out the door. Bummer.

Venice Avenue is the main street here and it's rather pretty:

The median is home to a flower garden:

Like many American cities these days Venice had its animal sculptures along the street - Venice has pigs. Each pig had a name that was a sort of pun. Here is a sampling of some of them:

They were fun. We headed back to the boat about sunset, checked the lines, had supper and went to bed. Another nice day in Paradise!
