Day 25, Monday, May 2nd. Fog rested on the anchorage this morning, adding to the serenity. Nonetheless, we were up and underway early (new windlass performed just fine). Weather turned perfect, but the scenery wasn't as pretty today. We hurried past Southport, SC and such places as "Muddy Slough," "Horseshoe Shoal" and "Snow Marsh" as cruised up the renowned Cape Fear River. We were passed by several ferries carrying vehicles across to Cape Fear and Treasure Island. Great names around here!
We hurried on into Stump Sound, past Alligator Bay and New River Inlet, then into "Mile Hammock Bay". This little basin has been dredged out by the Marines at Camp LeJeune (LeJeune owns all the land around the basin). They use it from time to time to launch and retrieve amphibious craft. We anchored a few hundred feet from what looked like an LST, but didn't have the right superstructure:
This was a very popular anchorage with about twenty boats of every description anchored with us.
