Day 24: North to Calabash, NC
Day 24, Sunday, May 1st. RUTH'S BIRTHDAY! And an important "0" one for her. The cold front finally came through last night and rinsed the boat off. In fact, it was still raining this morning. While we were waiting for the rain to stop, our next door dockmate, Kenny Gross aboard Kokomo invited us to visit with his ten-foot long boa constrictor, Bubba, who was napping on the aft deck:
Actually, Bubba turns out to be a "Bubbette" and she is lovely, calm and, uh, well-fed. I hope our friend Steve Major (phat.bak) sees this.
We finally got underway and headed north. It was an improving weather day. We stopped for fuel at a not-so-expensive stop, Myrtle Beach Yacht Club. Hard to miss, as it has a noticeable landmark guarding it's entrance:
Then we headed north at fast cruise. We feel like we are behind.
We immediately meet this formidable thing. "Swing bridge" is what they call it. We had to wait until the hour (45 minutes) for it to open:
On the Great Loop there is one lone "pontoon bridge." This is a floating "bridge," and anyone who wants to traverse north or south on the Intercoastal Waterway must wait for it to open on the hour. We got there just as it closed. This is what we saw:
To open, it lifts one end of its roadway and swings on end away (depending on the current direction, probably). Here is a picture as we were going through:
The rest of the day was uneventful except for all the nice phone calls Ruth got wishing her "Happy Birthday!":
We anchored in a lovely little cove with See-Doo's running and running and running. They finally stopped at dark. Sorry, no pictures.
We wanted to celebrate Ruth' big birthday, but being on the boat sort of limited us celebration-wise. However, Ruth was determined to have a birthday cake:
..and a delightful candlelight dinner, complete with candlelight from gift of friends Chaz and Gael Cone:
And then dessert. A cake made from "scratch" complete with, uh, caramel sauce (the recipe for caramel icing was not available) and one more candle from the Cones:
The Admiral was pretty tired by now, but the cake was MARVELOUS! Happy birthday to Ruth!
