Day 213: - Demopolis to Bashi Creek, AL
Day 213: Friday, November 25th: We got up early this morning and were underway by 6:30 (sunrise). The sky leaving Demopolis was gorgeous!
A couple of miles downstream we arrived at the waiting Demopolis Lock. The tow, Brook, had offered to wait for us to lock through first; nice guy:
Below the lock these rapids were impressive:
After that picture, Ruth realized she still had the camera set on "Sunrise" setting. She fixed it, and we had this view of the rapids and the spillover from the rather large dam:
In another few miles we came to this long limestone bluff. It was almost white like the White Cliffs of Epes, but not as high:
A closer look offered better detail:
We were now in truly isolated countryside. There are no towns or villages near, no development, no nothing. We have not had a usable cell phone signal since we left Columbus, MS several days ago. We watched for alligators but never saw any. We finally arrived at a secluded anchorage at a creek, Bashi Creek. This is a popular spot, yet we were the only ones here. It was well-protected and deep enough to accommodate us comfortably. It was narrow, so we put out anchors forward and aft.
This is looking to the mouth of the creek (by the way, this is the 5,000th picture we've taken on this trip):
Looking upstream behind us, one can see why we didn't go farther in:
