Day 209: Monday, November 21st: It rained most of last night and the prediction was for more heavy rain with wind and cold today. That's exactly what happened, so we stayed put at the quaint Marina Cove. Bill had developed a bad cold so he loafed around the boat feeling sorry for himself:

Ruth did laundry and several other chores. All five boats in the marina that had planned to go south today decided to stay.

Later in the afternoon the rain stopped and Fred, the marina manager, drove us in his pickup truck to visit the Tom Bevill Visitor Center, right next to the Tom Bevill Lock and Dam. The Center serves as the Tenn-Tom's official visitor center. It was built to look like an antebellum mansion in the Greek revival style. It is quite lovely and is very authentic. It houses several displays about the Tenn-Tom including a huge relief map of the waterway. We forgot to take the camera but here is a picture we took the next day from the Waterway:

Right next to the Center is the US Snagboat Montgomery. This is a 108 ft long sternwheeler that was used to remove fallen trees and other "snags" from the rivers. It was retired and dry-docked in 1982. It's open for visitors to tour and it was very interesting. This picture was also taken the next day:

We promised pictures of Marina Cove Marina yesterday, so here they are (actually taken tomorrow, Tuesday). Looking out over the fuel dock from the marina building, it's obvious how the weather had improved. Note the water hyacinth choking the water behind the dock. These water plants break off parts that go everywhere and start new colonies; they're bothersome:

We said the marina was rustic and quaint; here's the office and store. Note the single-wide that is the main part of the building:

A close-up of the sign reveals the vinyl siding of the trailer, a bird's next on top of the air conditioner and numerous spider webs. This place would make a good movie set:

We turned in early, hoping for an early start tomorrow.
