Day 156: Kuttawa to Cadiz, Kentucky
Day 156: Wednesday, September 21st: This morning the cloud cover made for an interesting sunrise although it was about 7:10am CDT:
We piddled around for a while drinking coffee while Ruth made pancakes for breakfast. Yummy!
About 11:00am we pulled anchor and continued our slow exploration of Barkley Lake. We were back into the rocky shorelines:
This building is nicknamed "The Castle on the Cumberland"; you can see why. Look closely at the water tower for a clue what it really is:
OK. It's the only maximum security prison the State of Kentucky has. KSP is Kentucky State Penitentiary. This prison holds the national record for the most executions on one day - seven, on July 13, 1928 no less.
This rock formation has the appropriate name, "Castle Rock Point". Rather pretty:
We went up the Little River for a couple of miles. This river goes all the way to Cadiz, KY, but our destination was the marina at Lake Barkley State Park. We were assigned a 70 foot covered slip. All the marina facilities were just rebuilt this spring and it is therefore in almost perfect shape. This was also one of the cheapest places we have stayed on the entire Loop ($.60 per foot including free electricity, free wi-fi, free cable TV - we watched as hurricane Rita intensified and headed to Galveston. Ruth spotted this floating log and resident turtle behind our slip:
We cooled down with the air conditioners again. Ruth, that hard-working first mate, pulled the covers off the bikes and sprayed them with UV protectant on the dock. While she was doing this a couple walked by and began chatting. They turned out to be Jerry and Nancy Barton. Jerry was Bill's boss in IBM back in 1983. Ruth didn't remember Jerry, but Bill knew him as soon as he glanced out the window. It was like old home week!
We discovered that the Bartons had done the Great Loop on their own a few years ago and cruise somewhere for about eight weeks every year aboard their 32 foot Nordic Tug, Gryphon. They keep the boat in Scottsboro, AL on the Tennessee River. This year they were headed for the headwaters of the Cumberland River above Nashville, TN.
We enjoyed happy hour (we always do) with them. Jerry made some good recommendations of anchorages and marinas along the Tennessee where we would be going in a few weeks.
We made plans to have breakfast together at the Park Lodge.
