Day 14: To McClellanville, South Carolina
Leaving Charleston on April 21, 2005, we went back down past the Battery. Now lined by a waterside street and lovely homes, this area was once full of cannon and military defense structures before Fort Sumter was built. It is easy to see why some of these houses cost over $20 million:
We detoured a mile or two down Charleston Harbor to get a close view of Fort Sumter where the Civil war began. We left Charleston wishing we could stay longer:
The trip up the waterway for the day was sort of boring. The winds built from the southwest signaling a storm system, so we sought a safe haven and found McClellanville, SC, a sleepy fishing town. It was totally charming and friendly. We docked at the local "marina".
The marina boasted a Ship's Store, a restroom/shower, and a repair facility. Really cool! But very different from Charleston:
It had all the charm and quaintness anyone could ask for:
..and even had a sleeping shrimping fleet. The shrimper season is from about May 7th to the first of January. Times are tough for these watermen due to foreign competition coupled with the rising cost of fuel.
