Day 129: Monday, August 22nd: The wind was still too strong to attempt passage on the open water of the Straits of Macinac, so we stayed in DeTour for another day. First order of business was to wander into the little town and shop.

As we left the dock there were half a dozen ducks feeding on the shallow bottom. Often, they would tip up on their heads and feed upside down; it was quite a sight. We tried to catch them in that position, but this is the best picture we could get. Note the guy on the left:

At the entrance to the marina was this huge anchor. We wish we had it the day we broke loose in the Chesapeake Bay:

Another striking thing in the town was the proliferation of Mountain Ash trees full of bright red berries. They made quite a sight:

Another pretty church in this town of 420 people was the Episcopal Church:

We stopped in the local "sporting goods store". It was a mix of fishing, boating, hunting and clothing items. Ruth bought a nice cardigan sweater and Bill talked fishing with the proprietor. This was obviously the hub of the latest fishing news in the area but, sadly, the fishing had been lousy lately. Bummer.

Next was lunch at the "Dockside Restaurant". Good home-style food. Then we visited the free DeTour Museum. It was a tiny facility with a hodge-podge of things but had some old stuff in it that we enjoyed seeing:

When we got back to the boat, this sailboat that was also a Looper was moored a couple of slips from us. Her mast was in storage somewhere. This boat, named Highborne Lady, had plenty of character:

The DeTour Marina is right on the Saint Mary River system. This is the route ships take when going from Lake Huron or Lake Michigan into or out of Lake Superior. Some of these boys are over 1,000 feet long:

The cocktails tonight were on Sheetless. CaySea and Casey's sister, Connie, and her husband, Phil joined us. They had been touring on their Harley-Davidson from Cedar Rapids, IA. In spite of the lousy fishing, Phil grabbed a rod and, on the third cast, caught a four-pound Walleye. Quite a fisherman!
