Day 119: Pont au Baril to Britt, Ontario
Day 119: Friday, August 12th: We thought we had planned a long day today, so we got up at dawn (6:00am). The sunrise was pretty reflecting in the water:
There was rain in the distance. See the rainbow?
We contacted Pollyanna on the radio and coordinated getting underway. The bracket on our dinghy motor that holds it upright broke and Bill had to tie it in the "up" position. Meanwhile, Ruth jockeyed the boat among the huge rocks. As we left the protection of the anchorage, the landscape became eerie but pretty. It looked like we were on the moon and someone had flooded it:
Shortly after, in a narrows, we spotted this unusual "cottage":
We made about a 10-mile run in the open water of Georgian Bay. The following seas built to about four feet high, making it very difficult to stay on track. We discovered the channel through the million rocks hiding just under the surface had been changed and our charts were wrong. We were flying blind in a heavy rain. It was good to spot the lighthouse marking the entrance to protected water:
The trees in this part of Ontario take on an asymmetrical shape due to the prevailing westerly winds; they lean whether there is wind or not:
We cruised a couple of miles up Byng Inlet. Shortly after noon we moored at Wright's Marina in the tiny town of Britt (yes, it turned out to be a short day). Integrity was among some nice boats:
The marina was quite nice with laundry, showers, fuel, a nicely stocked ship's store, and pretty grounds. There were grills and picnic tables all along the docks and the flowers were pretty as well:
We went to dinner with the crew of Pollyanna at the Little Britt Inn. This was a remarkably good restaurant with a festive atmosphere and excellent menu ($$$$). They even picked us up at the marina in a Mercedes. We couldn't figure out how they stayed in business with the short boating season and a local town with a population in the hundreds; maybe it was the ($$$$).
And so to bed--
