Day 110: Bobcaygeon to Rosedale, Ontario
Day 110: Wednesday, August 3rd: This morning we used the wi-fi services of the marina for a while to catch up on bill paying and banking, then got underway about 10:30am. It was a short half mile to the first lock, Bobcaygeon. We saw this classic old canal boat as we approached the lock:
Past the lock we were in Sturgeon Lake, a big lake that is shaped like a "Y".
We came down the right arm and up the left. In this area, the cottages and homes didn't seem as fancy:
At the junction of the "Y" arms we passed one of several steamboat wharfs that were used as the sole means of lake transportation in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today it is a public wharf and popular for swimming:
This home had nice terraced landscaping:
The once-threatened Osprey will use almost anything for a nesting spot:
Approaching Fenelon Falls we passed this favorite diving cliff that looked to be about 30-40 feet high. There were half a dozen teenagers enjoying the free-fall:
The village of Fenelon Falls is appropriately named; these are the falls:
Yup! This one is Fenelon Falls:
Watching the boats in the locks is a popular tourist pastime. Locks near the tourist villages have the most tourists. That's new friend, Trevor, on the yellow Houseboat, "Marjo":
The Fenelon Falls Museum was an attraction we passed up. They "say" it is nice:
Once clear of the lock, we encountered this daunting, narrow passage through the swing bridge. Those concrete blocks are rather hard if you hit one:
We crossed Cameron Lake, another of the Kawartha lakes. That's the name given to the chain of lakes between Peterborough and Lake Simcoe. Then down a short canal we came to the Rosedale Lock:
We locked through. Ruth spotted the pots of flowers sitting on the lock gates:
This lock is a popular overnight spot for boaters. We decided to stay for the night although we had only gone about 20 miles today and it was about 2:30 in the afternoon. We moored to the lock wall; the walls ended up full of boats:
We shared an impromptu potluck supper with new friends Trevor and Sandy from Marjo. We had shrimp on skewers, taco salad and enchilada casserole. Different!
The temperature today hovered just above 90; hot summer! We traversed three more locks for a total of 104 so far.
