Day 104: Thursday, July 28th: Ruth found a place to get her hair cut, then went back to the bakery for more pastries (that girl loves pastry!). We were getting short of cash so Bill tried to find a functioning ATM. It turned out that the phone system that allows the ATMs in town to communicate was inoperative, so no cash. He finally found a bank open and solved the problem.

We got underway and went across the river to buy fuel. This fuel is the least expensive in the area at $.885 per liter (that's about $2.75 per US gallon - ouch!). Integrity has been averaging about two gallons per hour of running, or about 3.5 miles per gallon. At this price, that's about 79 cents per mile.

We left the fuel dock in company with Ruth and Norb aboard Maha Rani. We would transit six locks today with them. First was Lock 13:

The next few locks were built such that they want the boats to tie off on the port (left) wall in Lock 13, starboard (right) wall in Lock 14, then port in 15, starboard in 16. This makes for hurried fender changing since the locks are very close together. After Lock 16, they were starboard ties. Here's Lock 14, Crowe Bay:

This part of the Trent-Severn Waterway is actually following the Trent River. There are some pretty homes along the way with nice landscaping:

The fishermen (and fisherwomen) were preparing for a morning of angling:

This house caught our eye. They had a deck on top of the boathouse, complete with shade tent:

Along the riverbank, there were occasional exposed tree roots. One owner had painted faces on the exposed tree roots. They were really funny to see, but hard to photograph:

Lock lesson #101: The lock walls in these old locks are occasionally rough and broken. They are always very slimy with algae growth. The broken place in this picture had a nasty piece of steel rebar sticking out. That thing could really damage a fender or, worse yet, the boat's fiberglass hull! The heavy gloves are needed to avoid dirty hands:

Tiny shellfish adhere themselves to the walls in places. They "pump" little squirts of water, which is fascinating to see. Here, you can't see the squirts, just the little shells:

Locks 16 and 17 are stair-step locks and, together, they lift the boat 48 feet. This is a newly-rebuilt pair of locks - very modern and all power operated:

So that you know, there are long sections of the river that are pristine and totally devoid of any civilization. Like this:

We arrived at the last lock of the day, Lock 18, in the little town of Hastings:

We tied to the lock wall right in town for the evening. We were surprised to find we were tied right behind "Second Love", another Monk 36. Owners Ted and Jo Clark live in St. Michaels, MD, on Chesapeake Bay. They were on their way home after cruising in the North Channel on Lake Huron:

We hosted the crews of Maha Rani and Second Love for cocktails and swapped information on our respective experiences. Good fun!

It had been a pretty day, and the heat had finally left the area. Good sleeping tonight.
