We've seen ruins of entire cities (Aphrodisios, built in honor of Aphrodite, and Ephesus, the site where the Apostle Paul was imprisoned for his outspoken views in support of Christianity and to whom he wrote several letters -- remember the Book of Ephesians?) Public bathrooms with running water and an elaborately decorated library of papyrus scrolls were among the many highlights of these ancient cities, much of which unbelievably dated back to 3000 BC.
These cozy public bathrooms had water running beneath them at all times to carry away the waste.
The library at Ephesus
The agora (marketplace) at Ephesus. The archway in the background, one of the newer structures here, was built in honor of Caesar Augustus who was reigning when Christ was born.
