T-Rex Software and Domain Names:

    Domain Name

This is the string of letters you find after "www." in web addresses.  In www.ford.com, "ford.com" is the domain name.

Every website has to have one -- well, technically, that's not the case.  You could have a website named "244.33.211.191" but most folks find words easier to remember!

There are "domain registrars" out there with the responsibility of assigning domain names.  As you might expect, there are lots more domain names assigned than websites.  For example some companies might choose to have several domain names in order to allow variations in spelling -- or to prevent a competitor from using a similar domain name to siphon off customers.  For example, if you type "www.reliablecarriers.com" it will take you to the "real" website which is "www.reliable-carriers.com".

So a "domain name" is what you want the rest of the world to use when trying to get to your site.  Ours is "t-rexsoftware.com".

Most domain names end in ".com"? The "com" stands for commercial and most businesses use that suffix.  But as more and more people get onto the web, more and more suffixes have been created.  Now, you can find domain names that end in ".net", ".org", ".gov", ".biz", ".tv" and more.  And that's just websites in the United States!

The net of this discussion is this: If you want a website, you need to reserve a domain name.  We can secure your domain name for you.
