That's why the military came up with a uniform method of saying letters phonetically; that is, using non-ambiguous words to indicate letters of the alphabet.
The standard phonetic alphabet has undergone changes over the years -- and hams are free to use anythinfg they want. The "standard" phonetics are just a suggestion.
