Stories From (before) My Life

Today I am years old.

The reason this is linked from my Memoir instead of appearing in-line is because it happened well before my birth.

Prohibition was a 13-year social and legal experiment that banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors.  Spanning from 1920 to 1933, it remains one of the most famous examples of unintended consequences in American history.

Instead of curing society's ills as its backers hoped, it gave rise to the modern era of organized crime and the iconic cultural landscape of the Roaring Twenties.

Also the Great Depression started right near the end of prohibition in 1929.  No booze, no money; times were very tough.

To fill the alcohol gap, many people built and operated illegal distilleries ("stills") making homemade corn liquor called "moonshine".

My Dad and my Uncle Bunny were enterprising young men.  While federal officers in Arkansas were heavily invested (and largely ineffective) in stopping the manufacture and distribution of moonshine, the feds in the adjacent state of Oklahoma were much more effective.  With supply shut down, demand continued...

The Cone boys came up with the idea of buying moonshine from nearby stills and trucking it to Oklahoma border towns where they could sell it at a handsome profit. They acquired an old Ford Model T pickup truck...

...and would visit a still or two and fill a washtub with this liquid gold.  When filled, they'd drive over rough, unpaved roads to Oklahoma.

Dad would drive and Bunny would be in the bed of the pickup managing the washtub, trying to keep the 'shine from sloshing out.

They'd set up outside a roadhouse joint where men would come with empty jugs and dip out a gallon for $3.  When the washtub was empty, Dad and Bunny (who played mandolin and saxophone respectively) would join in with the local band, play until dawn and drive home.

I don't know if you'd call it irony or foreshadowing, but both Dad and Bunny made their post-prohibition careers in the liquor business...
