VOTR - Buzz and Jackie's Trip Home
Monday, July 31, 2006
Monday morning had us up bright and early meeting Ron and Robin at 7AM; we headed off for our adventure home. R & R were headed to Amarillo and then to Dallas to see their son, and we were on to Floydada -- all in the beautiful state of Texas.
This was definitely a driving day. We only stopped to release and replenish bodily fluids and also the necessary automotive fluids. No problem releasing those. The scenery changed from those big looming mountains to plains and plateaus and then, of course, the flats of Texas. But before parting ways with Ron and Robin a large ice cream cone was spotted in the distance:
.. you got it, yes, we had to stop. But only one of us indulged; no, just one caught on film. Hmmm, how does he stay so trim!
Sure was good. We wished each other well on the rest of each others' trips and parted ways.
We called Bobbie & Bill Weir as we left Amarillo to apprise them of our impending arrival and, when we were about thirty minutes out, we saw this blue Suburban coming at us with Bill's arm hanging out the window and waving frantically. They had come to escort us into town:
How very sweet of them! Our first sight was the town sign with all this information:
We were treated like royalty at their lovely home. But first on the agenda was getting to know the other member of the household. Bubba - you have got to love him:
For those of you who know us, while we are on the road a whole lot, we do have our own pets:
.. also to keep their beautiful 1979 Shark:
We had a great home-cooked meal and lots of conversation. We then retired to the "lighthouse room" (their guest room) to finally sleep in an air-conditioned bed room. It's not like us not to take pictures, but after all we were tired. Bobbie has a wonderful lighthouse collection and has decorated the room in great style.

Tuesday morning had The Weirs giving us the tour of the town. What a charming small town. First on the agenda was a trip to the local Chevrolet dealer Oden Chevrolet:
the local pharmacy (not a CVS or Walgreen's) and (of course) on to lunch at Leonard's Cafe:
We just loved their mascot!
Buzz even managed to wash some of the road dirt off the 53C5:
..so he could show a few of the townspeople.
We had met Wayne York in Bowling Green, KY at a Lot Lizards function and noticed his Corvette which had some awesome flames on it (Oh, I stand corrected "actual fire"). Well, it needed a little touch-up so we went to the shop where it was being worked on:
What an interesting establishment:
..called Stapp's Airbrush X-treme. Andy Stapp is the artist and painter. WOW! is all we can say. These pictures are just a few examples of his work:
All we can say is: pretty interesting stuff. Buzz seems to think that a certain white Corvette may be in line for an Andy make-over:
Guess he doesn't just paint cars; this is another project he is going to tackle for the town:
This is to be in a memorial park. Buzz thinks it would look great with actual fire on the sides, but don't think so.
Next it was off to Plainview, to see Wayne Arnold and his car collection. We had met him at the NCM and now we get to see his toys. He has some very nice vehicles. He even has some very nice Coca-Cola items. It was very friendly of him to share with us.
Well after all this hard work it was once again snack time, yes there is an ice cream shop in Plainview. Once again we found another charming and friendly establishment with great ice cream:
Wayne was even kind enough to return Bill's forgotten cigarettes:
Later on that evening we met Wayne Arnold and his lovely wife Verge for dinner at a nice local Mexican restaurant. It was great, once again no pictures, even Buzz enjoyed the food!

We said our goodbyes early Wednesday morning as Bobbie was preparing to leave for work in her beautiful '79. We headed for home and made it to Breaux Bridge, LA and then..

Thursday we trucked to Madison, FL. Here we were told to try the local bar-b-que:
After all, we have had it several times on the trip. It was ok; our favorite is still HB's in Little Rock.

Friday found us arriving home.
What a fantastic trip from beginning to end.,s We can't say enough about our traveling companions. We were lucky enough to be with two great couples that are easy to travel with and always have a good sense of humor. We will miss their smiling faces --- 'til next time!
