NCM Labor Day Celebration 2001

The seventh NCM Labor Day Celebration was terrific. Well, the weather wasn't terrific until late Saturday but it wasn't terrible, either. The background color of this page was just wishful thinking for most of the time...

    Burkhart gift

Friday began with the presentation of this terrific 1967 L-89 Corvette Coupe to the NCM. Wayne and June Burkhart donated this very rare automobile to the Museum. One of only sixteen built, this Corvette is valued at $300,000!

Here are Wendell Strode (NCM Director), Joe Spielman (GM Executive), Wayne and June with that special Corvette:

BTW, Joe Spielman is credited in Jim Schefter's book "All Corvettes Are Red" as being the principal person responsible for making the C5 Corvette a reality. Thanks, Joe!

Here is Dolly Cole (Chairman of the Board of the NCM) and Joe:

    Museum Delivery (for four!)

One of the best options on the C5 Corvette is RPO R8C. For a small sum (some of which goes to the Museum) you can arrange to have your new Corvette delivered at the Museum. Four such cars were delivered at the 2001 Labor Day Celebration:

And here they are! The Silver Z06 is Bob Gunderman's, the leftmost Electron Blue Z06 is Ray and Mary Barbour's, the rightmost Electron Blue belongs to Bill Kenner -- and the Torch roadster is for Betty Skelton.

Betty Skelton is a genuine national treasure. She holds or held dozens of aerobatic speed, altitude and performance records -- and many land-speed records. In 1956, she was a driver for GM when Corvette fielded three racers at Sebring -- our first factory-sponsored racing effort. And, today, she takes delivery of her Torch C5 Roadster!

Of course, the heart of Corvette was present to help the NCM Museum Delivery Team. Here's Corvette Chief Engineer Dave Hill and Corvette Brand Manager Rick Baldick with their congratulations to Betty:

    This is one happy racer-lady!

Here's Bob Gunderman getting his keys to his Silver Z06 from Dave Hill:

...And here's Dave signing the fuel rail cover of Bob's ride:

Friends Ray and Mary Barbour received their Electron Blue Z06 as well. Are they pleased?

Here they are with Dave Hill:

They came prepared; here's their California tag and Ray's T-shirt:

    ...and then ...... they're gone!

You can see more pix of Ray and Mary's delivery by clicking HERE.

Speaking of the NCM Museum Delivery, here are some of the Team Members along with Rick Baldick and Dave Hill. Judy Yanko (far right) is the leader of that team; they do a great job making those who have their C5s delivered at the Museum feel special. Thanks to you all!

I'm really sorry that I got virtually no pictures of Bill Kenner and his EB Z06 Delivery; my bad, Bill; maybe this is better than nothing...

    Around the grounds...

The weather was gray but the comraderie was unaffected; seeing old friends and making new ones is what the NCM events (and the Corvette hobby) are all about.

Here are friends Amy and Larry Stoneburner:

Here's a great friend of Corvette and the C5 Registry. This is (recently retired) Sonny Kilgo. Sonny helped scores of us to be in the plant when our cars were on the line. Thanks, Sonny!

My bride Gael's mom passed away in May; friends Buzz and Jackie Nielsen purchased a brick in her memory and it was placed during the weekend. Here are Buzz, Gael and Jackie with GrandMommy's brick:

    Here's the brick in place:

For those of you who remember that I hit Gael with the C5 two years ago on the way to the NCM Fifth Anniversary Labor Day celebration (and no one will let me forget...), here's her brick:

Buying a brick is a great way to commemorate any event, click HERE to learn how you can buy a brick yourself.

    53-55 Gathering

As far as I know, this weekend hosted the largest gathering of 1953, 1954 and 1955 Corvettes ever assembled. Here's Kurt Meier (the organizer of this part of the weekend) hovering above the ground as a pair of '53s are unloaded from their carrier:

Here's the lineup. Click it to see it much bigger....

They were all just fabulous cars:

There were lots more wonderful activities but I'll leave those to be documented by others. We had a simply great time (as usual)!

See you next year!
