I started restoring the car in 1995 and finished it in 1998. It was featured in the NCM calendar for August, 2000. My son graduated from the University of Kentucky School of Medicine in 1998, and, pressed for a gift to give him, I gave it to him at his commencement in Lexington (Go Big Blue), KY.
Suffering from a severe case of the 'goo', I went into severe withdrawal for a straight-axle and did some soul-searching as to what Corvette I really wanted, if not for the '62. I knew I loved the '54 from the first time I saw it as a kid. Expensive thought! I met M.L. Young at the Queen City Chapter Meet of the NCRS and we started talking about the 'early boys' and, next thing you know, I had an appointment with M.L. to look at his '54, which hadn't been driven since 1974, when it returned home from the very first NCRS meet in Wapakonetta, OH. I leaned on Ron Whitaker (Mr. Early Corvette) to look at the car with me and he put his stamp of approval on it.
That, in a nutshell, is how I came to have #3957 parked in my family room. My Corvette, along with 24 other early Corvettes, were part of the 2001 Celebration at the NCM. I was fortunate to be the National Volunteer Chair for assembling the early cars and I must confess that I had a great time doing it.
Go 'Vettes!
