Randy' McClure's 1979 Corvette

(Alternate Participant)

I am a General Member of the Corvette Museum and I have been looking forward to playing a small role in the Historic Motorama. I was surprised to learn that I was selected as the Secondary Participant.

I guess I have wanted a Corvette since I was 8 years old. That was when I first fell under the spell of the Corvette. It was a C2 Coupe and I can remember having a funny feeling in my stomach. I know now that it was a love of the Corvette. It wasn't until some 32 years later when I bought my first Vette. I had been attending graduations of Police Officers from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in southeast Georgia for a number of years. Jim Worrall, one of the Officers who had graduated a year earlier, told me he wanted to attend the next graduation. I asked Jim, who has a red 1972, if we were going to fly or take his Vette. Jim agreed to take the Vette and we setout on the 500-mile trip to southeast Georgia. I didn't know if Jim had any thought of me driving his '72 or not. Well somewhere on the I-16 Jim, being the good Corvette owner, gave me the keys and told me to drive the rest of the way. I was nervous but eagerly accepted and it wasn't far down the road that I decided, I had to have a Corvette. Shortly after my first experience driving a Corvette, I found my first Corvette. It was a 1979 L-82 four speed, black with tan interior. The man that had it was the father of a 15-year-old who was about to get her drivers license and he had to sell or let her drive it as her first car. I had to have this Vette for two reasons. First it's a Corvette, and second it was a 79, the same year my son was born. After getting my first Corvette in April 1998, I have participated in every Corvette Caravan to the Beach sponsored by the Circle City Corvette Club of Dothan, Alabama as well as Mid America's Corvette Funfest in Effingham, Illinois. America's sports car, the Corvette was built to drive, as much as you can.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this historic event. I don't wish any bad luck on Jim Smith, the Primary Participant, but I would love to have the opportunity to include in my Vette's photo album, photographs of participation in this event.
