Al Hill's 1953 Corvette

(Primary Participant)

I have always admired all Corvettes, especially the '53, and had been looking for a '53 for a while. Then I found two at ProTeam Corvette Sales this past July. I had to have one of them. I took a day trip to Ohio, spent the afternoon with the sales rep, and left with a bill of sale in my hand, the proud owner of # 281 out of 300 made, which achieved Bloomington Gold in 1984. And I still had time to grab a hotdog at Tony Packo's before my return flight!

Whenever I speak with someone about my '53, they always ask "That's the one that has the wire headlight covers, right?" or "Was that the first year of the Corvette?" And when they see the car, there is just one word spoken: "Wow!"

I cannot explain my fascination with the car. Maybe it is because the '53 is the first American sports car, or because it is clean and simple, or because it is elegant, or just perfect. Or perhaps it is because I have a thing for rare, old, or unusual items. I collect old, rare computer design documents and papers, and I have a 1968 computer that I restored that uses core memory (and is still operational). Or maybe it is because I was born in '53. There is something to be said about a car that is the same age as the owner, and is in better shape than the owner.

I am extremely fortunate to be able to participate in the Historic Motorama, and be a contributor to this event and the National Corvette Museum.
