Kurt & Caroline Meier's ('54) Motorama Story

REMEMBRANCES FROM A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW

For a week, I thought I was king of the 1954 Corvette year, representing all of those 3640 Corvettes made in 1954, in spite of the fact that some of those fiberglass bathtubs were over the Glasspar rainbow. And why not! I was privileged to follow Al Hill's 1953 for 1000 miles, and, when not driving, to try to keep up with Al as his designated caregiver for the week. The bonus of it all was to see 49 other Corvette owners who couldn't wipe the perpetual grins off their respective mugs. Oh, what a trip. To be treated like royalty for a week was quite a thrill.

This Motorama just didn't happen. Quite to the contrary. It really sunk in after the laundry was done, the car washed and the sorting through the memorabilia that this little idea of a Motorama was spectacularly planned-and executed-by someone with vision and dedication. In short, only a Corvette guy could have pulled this dream off. Larry Hayes, you really did make a miracle of a week for me. Not that I'll ever forgive you, Larry, for asking me to make room for Al Hill after he returned from the flat tire fiasco. Hey, I was in the lead for 1.3 miles in the Motorama and, in my own mind, I looked pretty cool up there. But, forgiveness reluctantly granted, you had all of the bases covered and covered with style.

Larry, you also had some great help in this venture. Bobbie Jo Lee, who is a whole lot better looking than you, and Glenn Darwin really showed a lot of dedication throughout the entire trip. The entire trip was a whole lot of work for all of you, yet you acted like you were having as much fun as I.

So, for all of the great moments, visits, gifts received and gas pumped, what will endure for me is the hard work that I witnessed being performed by Larry, Bobbie Jo and Glenn. Please take a bow. You deserve it. And thanks for all those memories.
