Sunday, April 25th - Bowling Green to Indianapolis
Today we got organized and ready to go. We invited everyone we saw at the C5-C6 Birthday Bash to come to the Museum at 10am today to see us off.
First task was to install the static-cling signs on both sides of both cars. I reasoned that since I designed them and got them made, Buzz would get the honor of putting them on the cars:
I tried to alert everyone I could think of to use the NCM "Outside" webcam:
..to capture our departure but, sadly, no one did it (so far as I know).
A little last-minute re-packing and revelry:
Anyway, here we are, the happy travelers, ready to mount up and head off:
..and away we go!
..next to surface in Indianapolis at the Indy Motor Speedway:
After a quick lap on the track (really! It was in a 30 passenger bus -- but a lap on the Brickyard nonetheless) we spent some time in the Hall of Fame Museum. What a place!
(Corvette will pace the 2004 Indy 500 for an unprecedented sixth time)
Among dozens of great race cars, two stood out for me. This one was the winner of the very first Indianapolis 500 'way back in 1911:
And this is the 1957 Corvette SS donated to the Museum by Zora Arkus-Duntov on behalf of GM. If the front end seems familiar, it should. This car was the inspiration for the front end design of the 1953 Commemorative Edition Corvette we're driving on our Route 66 adventure:
See?
