Buzz and Jackie's Monterey Adventure 2002

    Saturday, August 17th

Saturday brought us to the Laguna Seca Track for the Monterey Historic Races:

I have to admit, we were a little late getting over to the track, so we missed out on being part of the 50 years of Corvette display and the chance to do laps of the track. We were in time however to enjoy the hospitality of General Motors on the Corvette Island. We had a super lunch and were treated to the use of a great place to watch the races. As you can imagine, the very biased crowd cheered all the Corvettes that went by as they went by the seats. One of the highlights of the day was the thunderous roar in the distance that left no doubt that the C5R was on its way!

If you have ever heard that sound of the American V8 at full throttle, there is no way of missing the car. Soon the sleek yellow racecar piloted by Oliver Gavin came into view and the whole grandstand jumped to life and cheered at the top of their lungs. He drove around for 4 of 5 laps and was just as big a hit every time. This left all with goose flesh. There were many more heats and all were very enjoyable, but the last heat put the Corvettes against their arch nemesis the Cobras. All with great anticipation watched this, and when the Corvette pulled to the front all went nuts again. What a show.

After the races were over, it was off to the hotel to clean up and head out to Salinas and The Pub for an extraordinary roast beef dinner and once more great friends both old and new. Again we were graced with the presence of David Hill, along with his lovely wife Karen, sons, James and John, and Jamie a friend. Dave this time really opened up about the C6 and told us all about it! (Yeah, riiiiight!). He was presented with a shirt and hat from the Pacific Grove Club and remarked that it was the first time he had seen the 50th logo on a yellow hat, which by the way had been autographed by the attendees.

He graciously stayed after to put his autograph on various items.
