Four Freshmen Through The Years

In the 1960s, FreshFan Jim Creedon rescued a bunch of original 16" disc transcriptions that were headed for the dumptster. In 1993 at a Four Freshmen Society Convention, FreshFan Joe Delice traded his vertical transcription player to Jim and (finally) those transcriptions could be heard (and digitized). The Four Freshmen Society decided to produce a CD of records "through the years". This is it -- but, to get one, you gotta join the Four Freshmen Society!

Group #2

This is cover art from the "Four Freshmen Voices in Modern" LP. It's Group #2 (From left: Bob Flanigan, Ken Errair, Ross Barbour and Don Barbour. This autographed cover belongs to FreshFan Loren Knutsen. You can click on it to see it REALLY BIG so you can read the autographs better.
This is the cover from what many fans believe is the best Four Freshmen LP/CD ever. It's Group #2 and studio musicians included Barney Kessel on guitar and Shelly Manne on drums. Awesome!

Group #3

The great folks at Mosaic Records released a NINE CD set of the complete Fifties Sessions for workhorse Group #3. Left to right: Ross Barbour, Ken Albers, Bob Flanigan and Don Barbour.

Remember smoking, Ross?

Here from the CEMA Special Markets "Portrait of the Artists" CD is Group #3. Clockwise from the top: Bob Flaningan, Ross Barbour, Ken Albers and Don Barbour.
From the Capitol Collectors Series, here's another Group #3 CD. Left to right is Ken Albers, Don Barbour, Ross Barbour and Bob Flanigan.

If you have only one "vintage" Four Freshmen CD, this is the one to have!

This is cover art from the Four Freshmen Live - Angel Eyes" Vipers Nest CD. Clockwise from top is Group #3 (Bob Flanigan, Ross Barbour, Ken Albers and Don Barbour).
This is cover art from the Four Freshmen Greatest Hits" Curb Records CD. It's Group #3 and left to right: Ken Albers, Don Barbour, Bob Flanigan and Ross Barbour.

Even though the cover art from this Viper's Nest release pictures Hal Kratzsch, this live album was recorded in 1958 by Group #3. Pictured though, left to right are: Hal Kratszch, Ross Barbour, Don Barbour and Bob Flanigan.

Group #4

This is cover art from the "Four Freshmen Day by Day" CD. It's Group #4 (clockwise from upper left) Ken Albers, Bob Flanigan, Ross Barbour and Bill Comstock.
This, too, is cover art from the "Four Freshmen Day by Day" CD. It's Ross, Bill, Ken and Bob.
This is cover art from the "Live at Butler University" CD showcasing Group #4. We used this same cartoon (with color added) on our home page.
Some marketing wonk at Capitol thought it would be a good idea to release a CD in Japan where the Freshmen cover other hits of the day (whether they fit the FF style or not). Half of these are (for the most part) never-heard-anywhere-else cuts from Group #4. From left: Bill Comstock, Ross Barbour, Ken Albers and Bob Flanigan.

I don't read Japanese well so I can't guarantee that all the cuts were actually recorded by Group #4.

This CD by Kahoots Records contains two LPs: "Live In Tokyo" and "Mount Freshmore". Group #4 did "Live in Tokyo". From left: Ross Barbour, Bill Comstock, Ken Albers and Bob Flanigan.

This is a rare 1968 LP with Group #4 on unusual (for the FF) tunes.

Group #5

Group #8

This is the cover from the "Fresh!" Ranwood Records CD; it's Group #8(left to right: Rod Henley, Bob Flanigan, Mike Beisner and Autie Goodman).

These guys were also Group #11 but this CD was from recordings made in 1986.

Group #18

The cover of "Voices in Standards, produced by Hindsight Records. Th CD has the guys performing with the Lew Anderson Big Band. The songs are those often associated with Frank Sinatra. Group #18 pictured left to right are: Mike Beisner, Bob Ferreira, Greg Stegeman and Kevin Stout.

Group #20

Pat Boone's Gold Label produced the "Still Fresh" CD of Group #20. You'll recognize the familiar Johnny Hart cartoon. Not only is it used on our website but in the original black & white on the "Live at Butler University" album from 1986.

I guess you could say that, left to right it's: Bob Ferreira, Greg Stegeman, Kevin Stout and Brian Eichenberger...

At the 50th Anniversary concert, Kevin Stout produced a CD from the performances. In sketch, left to right are Brian Eichenberger, Bob Ferreira, Greg Stegemen and Kevin Stout.

First CD single ever by the Four Freshmen.  The National Anthem, a capella; beautiful!  Left to Right: Bob Ferriera, Vince Johnson, Brian Eichenberger and Curtis Calderon.
This is a great live performance from the West Coast Jazz Party.  A reprise of some of the tunes from the best-selling "Four Freshmen and Five Trombones" album as well as new arrangements for five trombones!

Other CDs with appearances by the Four Freshmen

This Billy May CD (released in 1995) has 11 cuts with the Four Freshmen. No way to know which Group -- and that's a testimonial to the "Freshmen Sound"!
